I was born in Seoul, South Korea, but my family moved a few times – Fort Lee, New Jersey before moving to Houston, Texas. And I’ve continued to move westward and am currently living in Los Angeles, California. The diverse culture in LA is definitely a plus and you cannot beat the food in LA. Koreatown has endless Korean food!
What’s your typical day like at Cerebrae?
I joined Cerebrae about 2 years ago as a Senior Actuary and every day has been different and unpredictable. Overall, it’s a good balance of SQL coding, Excel modeling, and collaboration with other teams on product development and commercial efforts. I am also on calls with customers to better understand their needs and to go through some of our actuarial methodologies. And of course, one-on-one meetings with colleagues to catch up on work but also just to get to know each other especially as many of us work remotely.
What do you like the most about being an actuary?
What is there to not like! I love digging into the data and toggling between being in the weeds and seeing the big picture. And it’s rewarding to see my analyses directly impact broader business decisions. I was originally intrigued by the healthcare industry when the debate around the Affordable Care Act was in the news. Now, being an actuary in the healthcare field, I am able to be data-driven and provide analyses that impact a system that is in a dire need of transformation.
What excites you about Cerebrae?
The vision of making the lifecycle of implementing and iterating on modeling and analytics around healthcare contracts super efficient and scalable. And of course, I am always excited on a daily basis about the amazingly smart and kind people that I get to work with at Cerebrae. So, the vision and the people.
What’s your favorite breakfast cereal?
I actually eat cereal at night pretty often. It’s a nice snack before bed. My favorites are Corn Flakes and Honey Bunches of Oats, and I’m team cereal-first-milk-second. My least favorite cereal is my kids’ leftover cheerios in the morning.
What game show would you be super awesome at?
Maybe the Price is Right? My past life as a pricing actuary might come in handy if they’ll let me do some Excel modeling on stage.
